                                                                        Mud & Grubb Lake

                  Schuykill County, PA

May 8, 2010, Saturday: Mud Lake, West Hempfield Township, Lancaster Co., PA

On Saturday May 8th, 6 DMS members visited the limonite localities at Mud Lake, in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster Co., PA. The collecting locality, where goethite "bombs" and massive limonite can be collected from the clays along ravine and lake areas, is located approximately 1 mile from the village of Silver Spring. Jim and Mimi Stauffer led the trip.

After hiking about 1/3 mile over “hill and dale”, we arrived at the collecting area where we collected numerous small specimens of goethite by digging in the talus and scratching away the underbrush. Although only several goethite “bombs” were found, it was still a very enjoyable day.
