Aggregates Quarry, Landisville, PA. This quarry mines the limestone and
dolostones of the Cambrian age Buffalo Springs Formation. Minerals that can be found
at this quarry include: calcite, pink dolomite, quartz crystals, fluorite, pyrite,
sphalerite and chalcopyrite. Collection is by hammer and chisel almost exclusively.

November 19, 2005, Saturday: Binkley-Ober Quarry, East Petersburg, Lancaster Co. PA: This quarry is mining limestone, dolostone, shale
and sandstone of the Cambrian age Buffalo Springs Fm.
Minerals that have been found at this quarry include: golden calcite, pink
dolomite, cubic and octahedral fluorite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite.
June 11, 2005, Saturday at 9:00AM sharp, we met at
the entrance to the quarry. A highlight of the fieldtrip was the finding of a
freshly blasted area containing a large vein of purple fluorite.
Some of the specimens recovered by Bob and Karissa were:
fluorite/dolomite/calcite in limestone matrix, pink dolomite crystal clusters, and fine,
cream colored calcite crystals, ranging up to ~3/4".

Bob found this Fluorite/Dolomite/Calcite
in Limestone from our most recent fieldtrip.

This pink Dolomite crystal
group also
came from the Binkley-Ober Quarry. |
November 13, 2004, Saturday: Binkley-Ober

Out in the Field
Bob Asreen
Binkley-Ober
Quarry, East Petersburg, PA - November 13, 2004
On November
13, 2004, 10 mineral collectors braved the cold windy conditions to
visit the Binkley-Ober Quarry in East Petersburg. Once
again, this was the first DMS trip into this quarry in a number of years. This is
also an active quarry that mines the limestone, dolostone, shale and sandstone of the
Cambrian age Buffalo Springs Fm. for road aggregate and cinder blocks
The
group included 9 DMS members (Joe Meloney, Ken Casey, Tim Cretien, John Osoinach, Karissa
Hendershot, Carl Muendel, Jeff Chalfant, Tom Pankratz and me) along with Jim Schoonmacker
from the MGS.
The
most notable find of the day was made
by Joe Meloney, whose very nice
specimen of pink dolomite is pictured on the DMS web site.
All
of us came
out of the quarry with numerous specimens containing calcite crystals, pink dolomite crystals, and purple fluorite and had a good time
while collecting them!
